July, 2015 Update

On Friday, July 31, 2015, Southern Minnesota Energy Cooperative (SMEC) closed on the acquisition of Alliant Energy’s Minnesota electric service territory and, on the same day, welcomed more than 43,000 new member-owners to the 12 participating electric cooperatives.

In so doing, the 12 cooperatives made history as never has there been so many electric cooperatives come together to successfully close an acquisition of service territory.

SMEC was formed to serve as the single point of contact for the transaction. The twelve SMEC member cooperatives are BENCO Electric Cooperative, Brown County Rural Electrical Association, Federated Rural Electric, Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services, Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative, Nobles Cooperative Electric, People’s Energy Cooperative, Redwood Electric Cooperative, Sioux Valley Energy, South Central Electric Association, Steele-Waseca Cooperative Electric and Tri-County Electric Cooperative.

Many new communities were welcomed into the electric cooperative family:

  • BENCO Electric Cooperative – Amboy, Bricelyn, Delavan, Easton, Elmore, Frost, Garden City, Guckeen, Huntley, Kiester, Vernon Center, Walters and Winnebago.
  • Brown County Rural Electrical Association – Comfrey and Hanska.
  • Federated Rural Electric – Heron Lake, Okabena, Sherburn, Granada, Northrop.
  • Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services – Adams, Albert Lea, Alden, Brownsdale, Conger, Dexter, Elkton, Emmons, Freeborn, Geneva, Glenville, Gordonsville, Grand Meadow, Hayward, Hollandale, LeRoy, London, Lyle, Mansfield, Maple Island, Myrtle, Oakland, Rose Creek, Taopi and Twin Lakes.
  • Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative – Le Center, Montgomery and Village of Ottawa.
  • Nobles Cooperative Electric – Avoca, Dovray, Ellsworth, Fulda, Kinbrae, Lismore, Reading and Wilmont.
  • People’s Energy Cooperative – Chatfield (also served by Tri-County), Dover, Elgin, Eyota, Plainview and Stewartville.
  • Redwood Electric Cooperative – Lamberton, Revere, Sanborn, Vesta, Seaforth, Wabasso, Walnut Grove and Wanda.
  • Sioux Valley Energy – Ash Creek, Beaver Creek, Hills, Kanaranzi, Kenneth, Magnolia and Steen.
  • South Central Electric Association – Bingham Lake, Darfur, Jeffers, La Salle, Lewisville, Odin, Ormsby, Storden and Trimont.
  • Steele-Waseca Cooperative Electric – Bixby, Ellendale, Hope, Litomysl, Medford, Owatonna, Pratt, Steele Center.
  • Tri-County Electric Cooperative – Chatfield (also served by People’s), Lewiston, Ostrander, Racine, Stockton, Utica and Wykoff.
